Marina Palamós hosted the first round of the Catalonia Individual Float Fishing Championship, part of the official Mar-Costa competition calendar. The event, held over two four-hour sessions, brought together athletes in a port setting that joined the circuit for the first time.
The competition will continue at the Port of l’Hospitalet de l’Infant, where the combined results will determine qualification for the 2027 Spanish Championship and the four representatives of the Catalan National Team.
Float fishing, one of the oldest fishing disciplines, has evolved into a highly technical sport. Although the rules are clear —one rod, one hook and mandatory use of a float— the level of equipment specialization and strategic approach means that every detail makes a difference.
The inner side of the breakwater provided optimal conditions for the event. Despite taking place in February, a month less favorable for migratory species, the day confirmed the good environmental condition of Marina Palamós’ waters. A total of 16 different species were recorded, all under catch-and-release practice, reinforcing the sport’s commitment to conservation and respect for the marine environment.

Among the most notable species were comber, saddled seabream, Mediterranean rainbow wrasse and thicklip grey mullet, with a total of 157 catches across both sessions. There were also unique moments outside the competition, including the appearance of an octopus and a moray eel, both carefully returned to the water.
Beyond the competition itself, the event highlighted the port as a safe and suitable winter venue for sporting activities, as well as the importance of understanding the marine environment — a key factor in this highly technical discipline.
